Liam Dawson Career Journey

Dawson is one of the most versatile players for Hampshire. He came up through the county’s strong youth program and played age-group cricket before making his Hampshire debut in 2007 at age 17. The next season, he was only 18 years old when he became the youngest player in First-Class history to score a century for Hampshire against Nottinghamshire.

Dawson’s first few years with the red-ball team were mostly spent as a batter. In 2010, he scored his 1,000th First-Class run for Hampshire, and he followed that up with centuries against Somerset and Warwickshire at the beginning and end of the 2011 Championship season.

Dawson made the most of his next chances with the ball, and in 2012 he got his first five-wicket haul for Hampshire. He was then given the job of opening the bowling in a great T20 season that helped Hampshire win their second title in three years. He was also on the List A team that won the title that summer, giving Hampshire the limited-overs double.

Dawson scored 1,000 runs in the County Championship for the first time in a single season in 2013. His 13 wickets at just 21.30 each helped Hampshire reach the T20 Finals Day for the fourth year in a row.

Dawson was then one of Hampshire’s best players in the second half of the 2015 season, especially in the Royal London Cup, where he took 12 wickets while averaging just 26.33 and scored 324 runs while averaging 64.80.

After a very successful off-season with the England Performance Programme (EPP) and England Lions, the left-arm got his first England call-up and was put in the squad for the 2016 ICC World T20 in India, along with James Vince.

Dawson had a memorable year in 2016. He played in his first T20I and ODI for England, against Sri Lanka at The Ageas Bowl, and against Pakistan at Emirates Old Trafford, where he took two wickets. During England’s winter tour of India, he got his first Test match and scored 66*, which was the highest score for a first-time player batting at number eight.
